Tina Arena has been announced as the opening act for the Darwin Festival.
The singer joins eclectic acts including the Soweto Gospel Choir and two all-male acts, the Choir of Man and burlesque act Briefs: The Second Coming.
Arena told AAP she was very excited about being a part of the festival.
“It was just really lovely to know first of all that there’s a festival up there and second of all being invited, and being a part of that guest list, is really exciting,” she said.
The singer said the festival should take the focus away from metropolises and bring performances to new audiences in regional areas.
As part of the festival in the Top End, 100 Darwinians will star in a theatre production titled 100 Per Cent Darwin. Running for two nights during the opening weekend, a cross-section of people have been chosen to represent modern Darwin life by German theatre company Rimini Protokoll.
Family-friendly events include the People’s Choice Teddy Bears Picnic and Wedhus Gembel, which is a collaboration between Australian puppetry group Snuff Puppets and independent artists from Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The National Indigenous Music Awards tribute to Yothu Yindi will return after its successful show at last year’s festival.
The full program for the festival will be announced on June 25.
“We hope these early announcements inspire and excite audiences ahead of this year’s festival,” artistic director Edwina Lunn said.
“We can’t wait to unveil the full extent of the treasures we have for our loyal Top End art, music, comedy and dance lovers, but are thrilled to reveal a little taste of what is set to be a thriving 2014 Darwin Festival this dry season.”
